Man-Eating Lions of Tsavo

And Watermelon Sculptures

So this buddy of mine (Kyle Thiessen) has a webpage, and the whole thing is made up of stream of consciousness short stories. Seriously, that's really all it is. The great thing though is that they're all damned funny, and being the artistic type, he's illustrated them all.

For his birthday this year I made him a little statue based on one of his more "normal" tales. You can read it if you like by clicking on the picture to your right.

I hadn't sculpted anything in almost a year, and this was a nice fun way to get back into the swing of things.

The ballerina was a bitch though.

The original sketch

I really like the way the tufts of fur came out.

The display box was made from balsa wood, and in keeping with the statues origins, was done with virtually no planning whatsoever. Underneath it's seemingly precise and level exterior, the things a mess. Thank god it wasn't something more complicated.

And the completed statue

My little homage to Terry Gilliam's "Brazil".

A reference which about 5 people will get, and since this ass now faces a solid wall, none will ever see it again. Except for here.

The ballerina has to have about a half pound of Sculpey "hidden" behind her for support. Hey, I was rushed for time, and elegance is a luxury.

Had it not shifted in the oven, those arms would have been at a dead hang straight down. As it is, they kind of lean annoyingly...

One day I may do another improvenovel statue, I'm leaning toward the one with a dog, a shotgun, several jugs of whiskey, and a 14 gallon barrel of gasoline. Should be interesting...
